Chain Reaction

Sir Isaac Newton created the saying from his observations that there is an equal reaction for every action. He was talking about more than physics!

We built the house high on the hill, never considering we would have to go up and down it. As we aged, the hill seemed higher and higher. We decided to drive down the hill for everything, including getting our mail. The problem that prompted another action was to buy cars that go up and down the driveway. At first, we tried maneuvering vehicles so they didn’t bottom out, but it didn’t work. As a result, we have had to buy all SUVs just to get up and down and into the garage. It's not a terrible problem, but sometimes I wish I could just have a smaller car!

The problem also arises when repairmen or handymen come to do work on the house. Often, their trucks cannot make it up the hill. The day we moved in, in August, with the temperature of 97 and humid, the movers had to carry each piece up the staircase and into the house. Many of the pieces then went upstairs to the second story. I am sure they hated us! We had to replace several appliances since we were here. The delivery people, who were warned about the hill, almost made it to the top of the stairs and then dropped the refrigerator. It took another week to get another new one here.

There are some positive points about being so high. Unwanted solicitors, political volunteers, and Halloween candy seekers often pass us by. Unfortunately, the view is blocked a lot in the summer when the foliage and the trees are in full bloom. Oh, it’s still nice but not as beautiful as it is in the winter.

You also never think that when you are making a long-distance move, you will have to find everything—a new bank, a new supermarket, new doctors and dentists, and new friends. Often, in a newly built area, the infrastructure is not there for you to locate the people and services you need. Then again, it isn’t like New York, where five people call you back trying to get the job you are offering. Sometimes, it is so laid back that they never call you back! Doctors are also needed here. There is a great shortage of Primary Care docs. Usually, you start with Doctors who take your insurance and then find none. Next, you need a specialist and must travel a way to find the specialty you need. It’s getting better, but that comes with increased population and traffic. The ever-creeping strip malls and fast food places surround our quiet neighborhood. Then again, as you get older, you will find that you need services for things nearby. That only comes with an increased population. You can’t have it both ways
