What’s Up, Doc?
After writing the last blog, I was reminiscing about my second pregnancy. Very different from the first. I had no nausea. Instead I was ravenous! I tried very hard to eat well, but sometimes all I could do was grab the closest thing available. I gained an enormous amount of weight, but I just couldn’t help myself. In those days, ultrasounds were not in general use for pregnant ladies. I didn’t know if I was carrying a boy or girl or elephant! I did say many times though that I hoped it was a boy because I was carrying either a football player or a flamenco dancer. The baby would stomp all day long. Finally the night came, it was March 31 and raining. It was the middle of the night when my daughter let out a scream! My husband and I immediately got out of bed. She was awake and smiling! “Did you have a bad dream?” we asked. “NO”, she answered. She was just fine! There was nothing to do so we told her it was still nighttime so go back to sleep. We went to our bed, confused, but she looked perfectly normal. Within a few minutes I heard “PING” and my water broke!
I managed to get to the bathroom and my husband called the doctor. The Doctor said, “How far along is she?” My husband answered, “She’s not far, she’s in the bathroom!” I could hear through the phone the doctor scream. “No, in labor!”
As usual, I started laughing as fluid was draining from my body. Anyway we had everything organized. My husband called our “on call” friend, then he called his parents. The plan was to have the friend who lived close come immediately to watch our daughter and then would be relieved by my in-laws.
It worked perfectly and within 15 minutes , we were off to the hospital!
I had a fairly average labor, but this baby was huge, especially for someone my size, (even though I had gained tons of weight). I accepted “twilight” sleep. It was April 1 and I had an April fool’s birthday boy!
I somehow, although with no proof, believe that the “ghost” somehow influenced my daughter’s life, and she in turn knew when her brother was about to be born. Well, they have always been weird like that! What do you expect with me as their mother.
