Meet the Mets!

My husband love sports, and has always been a fan of the local teams. Since he lived a portion of his childhood in Queens, and his Father before him lived in Brooklyn, they were both originally Brooklyn Dodgers fans. The Dodgers left Brooklyn to the horror of their fans, and The Mets, a new franchise came to Queens, NY to replace them. I understood the game, my Dad too, watched the Dodgers and Mets, but my Dad was not fanatic about it. When we married, it became apparent that Baseball and Football would be apart of my life. Later on, Ice Hockey and Golf and Tennis were added.

When the Mets started, it was difficult to watch them, but by 1969, the miracle team emerged and the Mets won the World Series. There was jubilation in the house! Once again a long period of mediocre to bad baseball followed the team. Our spirits were lifted once again in 1986 when again the World Series was ours. It has been a long dry spell since, ok to be fair they have made a couple of play off spots. Every year, the disappointed fans chant, “just wait till next year”.

It is hard to be a Met fan. My son, for example bucked the trend, and became a Yankee fan! My husband often says, “I don’t know where we went wrong!”

This year my children gave my husband, a terrific birthday gift. Through and organization called CAMEO, Keith Hernandez, who used to be a player on the Mets, in the good years, and now an announcer for the Mets, made a video with a little chat for my husband with information provided by my daughter and son-in- law

My husband had no idea and was absolutely flabbergasted when in a video Keith Hernandez wished him a Happy Birthday by name, and included information about where he worked and what he did and of course that he was a lifetime Met fan. It was a great gift.

Energized by the video, we were once again ready to root for the Mets. They have been very on and off this year , with a couple of good streaks but basically a lot of terrible games. Last night for example, they lost the game 12-1! It is difficult to root for them.

But life goes on and hope springs eternal, and someday, although I doubt this year, the Mets will take the league by storm, and once again we will feel like the years devoted to their mediocrity was worth the wait.

LET’ S GO METS!
