Snapple Snafu
You are encouraged to drink plenty of water on every diet I've ever been on. It is preferable to any diet drink. Unfortunately, I really don’t enjoy drinking water. It’s OK, but not constantly. When I was a kid, my parents used to have cases of soda in the basement. It was always my job to go into the basement and get some soda for dinner. The basement was finished and quite a pretty room, but it was dark and down two flights of stairs. I knew nothing would happen to me, but just in case, I made a deal with my dad. I would get the soda and sing the Stars Spangled Banner. If I stopped singing, he had to come and rescue me. He never had to make the trip.
Soda wasn’t the best thing for me or anyone else to drink. I can never remember being given a glass of water except for restaurants. I would always order a Coke with dinner.
When I met my husband's family, it was the opposite. They never drank soda; a water pitcher was always on the table.
Whether or not I can make a direct correlation between soda and diabetes, I don’t know. However, later on in life, both my mother and sister developed this horrible condition. Neither of them had the “signs” of a diabetic. They were thin and didn’t overindulge in the food they ate. My mother, like me, loved ice cream, but it wasn’t as if she had it daily. It was only then, when I was about 50 years old, that I was told both my grandmothers had been diabetic. Both, it seems, died of complications of the disease.
Diet sodas were introduced quite a while ago, in the 1950s. For some reason, my parents didn’t buy them. They thought they were dangerous and didn’t care for the taste. Fresca was introduced in 1966, changing my mother’s outlook on diet sodas! She became a Fresca addict. I wasn’t so crazy about it. I have tried and tried every single diet beverage that has come to market. Some are so vile I don’t know how anyone drinks them.
Finally, I found several that I liked! The problem was they didn’t like me! Everything from stomach problems to a burning tongue. I just couldn’t win. Today, there is something I like, and it agrees with me. Snapple, zero sugar. Only two of the flavors that are both sugar-free and contain no caffeine are Kiwi Watermelon and Apple. Luckily, they also don’t burn my tongue. The problem now is they are usually out of stock!
I still don’t enjoy water.
